Fourth Monday in Advent
Isaiah 7: 10-14 Psalm 24: 1-6 Luke 1: 26-38
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”
Luke 1, 30
Imagine how wonderful it must have been for Mary to be told that she had found favor with God! Did Gabriel have to say, “Do not be afraid”? What is there to fear for the one who has found favor with God? Through all the trials Mary endured in her life, she encountered each day sure in the knowledge that God thought of her as His ‘favorite’. Everyone knows that things are going to turn out well for God’s favorite.
What we need to focus on, though, about this moment in human history isn’t the fact that God favored Mary. It’s that Mary’s faith was so pure that she believed God favored her. A person with less faith, a person whose spiritual sight is clouded by sin, would be unable to really grasp the thought that the Creator of the Universe thought as highly as He did about one single human being.
The good news, the spectacularly wonderful news, is that God is as delighted with you as He is with Mary. You’re His favorite too! Your challenge isn’t to win God’s favor, it’s to believe you’ve won it. Purify your faith. Repent your sins. The result is you’ll come to know that the All and Everything thinks you’re the apple of His eye! Faith won’t make God love you. It will enable you to realize that you’ve always been loved.
Blessed Mother, thank you for being the perfect vessel of God’s love.
